Chef and Swedish transplant Helene Henderson is the founder and owner of Malibu Farm Pier Café and Restaurant, a farm-to-table destination beloved by Malibu locals and A-listers alike. Chef and Swedish transplant Helene Henderson is the founder and owner of Malibu Farm Pier Café and Restaurant, a farm-to-table destination beloved by Malibu locals and A-listers alike. Born to a Swedish mother and an African-American jazz musician, Helene’s passion for food is rooted in her childhood. Helene fell in love with cooking while waitressing during vacations at a French bistro in her hometown of Lulea in Sweden’s subarctic north. Strongly influenced by the fresh vegetables and seafood native to Sweden, Helene continued to experiment with Scandinavian cooking throughout her childhood until she moved to the US, first New York then Los Angeles, to pursue a highly successful modeling career. Years later, she returned to cooking because that’s what she loved.
In 1995, Helene launched her catering company Lavender Farms in Los Angeles where she fed many a hungry celebrity and began to lay the cornerstones of her culinary philosophy. She published her first book Swedish Table in 2005, an ode to Swedish cooking drawing from her childhood memories. Three years later, she moved to an expansive ranch in Malibu, planting a vegetable garden and fruit trees. She began throwing dinners for friends and family at her home and various area farms, cooking with seasonal ingredients from her property.

The wildly popular dining extravaganzas found their permanent home with the opening of Malibu Farm in August 2013, perched at the end of Malibu Pier. Helene singlehandedly changed the face of Malibu’s restaurant landscape, combining her Scandinavian foundations with California coastal ingredients. Her food philosophy – “fresh, organic, local” – is simple and revolves around finding the best ingredients and doing little to modify them.

Dedicated to spreading the farm-to-table concept and her way of life, Helene is opening Miami location in April 2018 at Eden Roc Miami Beach. Her unstoppable attitude and commitment to sustainability makes her one of the world’s most exciting chefs.
