Kissed by fire is Gariel Ferguson’s culinary incantation. Fire and meat have an ancient dance and Ferguson understands it well. He is known is the go- to chef for flame licking barbeque and jerk cuisine.

Gariel’s journey into the kitchen began at age 14 in Miami. In 1984, his family bought and operated Golden Bakery Inc. where he was put in charge of pastry and Jamaican patty production. He returned to Jamaica at age 26 and started his first restaurant, The Rib Kage Bar & Grill . The restaurant later expanded its operations to two locations. Gariel was also a partner with the culinary doyen of the Caribbean, the late Norma Shirley in Norma’s at the Marina, in Port Antonio. The restaurant was acclaimed by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the top 80 new restaurants that opened in 2005.

Using local, everyday banal ingredients in exciting and innovative ways is a strong hallmark of Ferguson’s.

“I think what makes Jamaican food different from the rest of the Caribbean is the integration of various cultures,” says Ferguson.

Known for taking diners on a sensory journey and seducing the palate, Gariel has cooked for prestigious local and international food events like The James Beard House, Nyam Jam and South Beach Food and Wine festival.

Gariel and his wife Gillian are presently operating a food consultancy business to facilitate the wide range of restaurant services required by local and regional entrepreneurs.
